Psychological Erectile Dysfunction (PED) is different from all other forms of ED as it is caused due to emotional or psychogenic factor, rather than the physical or organic ones. For instance, stress, anxiety, chronic depression, mood disorders, or emotional traumas can often lead to loss of interest in sex and consequent loss of penile erection in patient.

Following are a few treatments that are effective against PED:
Psychotherapy: It is of 2 different kinds -- counseling and psychodynamic therapy. While the latter emphasizes on reassuring and encouraging the patient to speak his heart out in a hope to get rid of any sexual conflict or problem in his subconscious, the former probes very little into the in-depth issues. However, in both forms of therapy, the sexual partner is required to accompany the patient.
Sex Techniques: These techniques help the patient in focusing on oral or manual sexual stimulation, rather than penile-anal or penile-vaginal intercourse. Practicing this technique for a certain period of time limits the necessity for firm and hard erection and reduces anxiety in patient’s mind.
Desensitization and Anxiety Reduction Techniques: The patient is counseled by a sex therapist to focus on what he and his sexual partner feels while having sex rather than focusing on the reaching orgasm or on the level of their sexual performance. This sensate focus approach is not goal-oriented and it helps the patient to get rid of feelings of guilt and performance anxiety during sex. He is then guided to progressively proceed to genital stimulation without keeping any goal of intercourse or orgasm in mind.
Cognitive Behavioral Technique: In this treatment, the PED patients and their sexual partners are counseled to correct their unrealistic expectations and misconceptions regarding sexual performance and function.
Systemic Therapy & Relationship Intervention approach: In this treatment, the counseling focuses mainly on relationship issues, such as trust and intimacy, sexual attraction levels, and dominance and status conflicts, which significantly contribute to development of psychogenic or psychological erectile dysfunction.
These therapies must be combined with administration of oral medications like Viagra (PDE-5 inhibitor medicines) to achieve best results in patients suffering from PED.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is commonly found in majority of patients suffering from CRF (Chronic Renal Failure). Nearly 9 percent CRF patients in the pre-dialysis stage, 70 per cent in the dialysis stage, and 43 per cent in transplant stage are reported to have been suffering from severe sexual dysfunction. Both psychological and organic factors are responsible for the development of this condition in the CRF patients. More..
