Male impotence, medically termed as erectile dysfunction (ED), has many different kinds in which it exhibits itself. The five main types include arteriogenic, venogenic, hormonal, psychogenic, and neurogenic.

A brief description of each of these types is as follows:
Arteriogenic ED: Narrowed or blocked arteries cause little blood to reach the penis leading to loss of penile erection. Main underlying reasons include past injury in genital regions, diabetes, cardiac diseases, elevated blood pressures, urologic injury, and/or orthopedic injury of pelvis.
Venogenic ED: It accounts for approximately thirty to seventy percent of ED cases and occurs when the penis veins fail to close down during erection. This causes the accumulated blood to immediately leak out from the penis, thereby resulting in failure to maintain penile erection. Venogenic ED is further classified into primary (congenital; disorder present since birth) and secondary (developed in later years of life)
Neurogenic ED: It is mainly caused due to inadequate nerve conduction and supply to the penile muscles. Main underlying reasons for this condition include perineal or pelvic injury, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, tumors, spinal cord injuries, and/or myelitis. Failure of the affected nerves to activate the penile veins and arteries during erection leads to neurogenic form of ED.
Hormonal ED: It occurs when the sex hormone balance in blood plasma gets disrupted due to various medical illnesses, like diabetes. In this type, loss of penile erection is mainly due to lack of male libido.
Psychogenic ED: It occurs due to psychological or psychogenic reasons, rather than any organic or physical impairment in the functioning of the veins, arteries, hormones, or nerves. The main problem lies in the patient’s mind and may emerge due to stress, anxiety, inferiority complexes, etc.
Erectile dysfunction, commonly called male impotence, is a serious problem that affects fertility of a large number of men every year. All the different kinds of ED work on a common principle; decreased blood flow to penis due to some or the other reason leads to loss of penile erection when stimulated sexually. Failure to initiate or maintain erection makes intercourse impossible, thereby resulting in infertility. Thus, fertility of a man can be severely affected due to erectile dysfunction. More..
